Safety for workers has been at the heart of the Canadian government for the longest time. Every worker is supposed to enjoy working without having to worry about their safety or that of their loved ones. It is for this reason the Northwest Territories and Nunavut government has put in place comprehensive safety measures that are supposed to ensure the safety of every person on each of the many islands that make up the region.
The territory is sparsely populated. For the many safety laws and regulations of the land to be effective, employers, employees and the government agencies have agreed to work together. The key safety regulations specifically say that if an employee witnesses any incidence at their place of work, whether a person was injured or not, to report the same to the safety commission. Areas which are covered by the safety laws include;
- Mining – The mining business should be undertaken under the Mine Health and Safety Act. Whether a business has been in the industry for many years or is new to the trade, close attention should be paid to the Act and because there are several changes that happen to it every so often. The Act covers wide areas such as registration of a business, the area that a firm can cover, renting of land, making of claims and compensation laws.
- Occupational Health Safety Regulations – This Safety Act covers a wide area. Every industry that you can think of, whether it is one which requires that you work from home or out there in a rig is covered under this Act. The Act takes a wide swipe at all health related matters such as rescue, where to report an accident or incident how and who should carry out first aid and so much more. The government has agents working in close collaboration with employers and the many employees working here.
- Oil and Gas occupational health safety – The general laws used to regulate this industry get their authority from the Canada Oil and Gas Operations Act. The laws are also drawn from other Acts but it is the prerogative of the WSCC to oversee the safety of each and every worker on the islands. The laws used here cover a wide area including who can be employed, safety at work, how and when to report an incident as well as the compensation of an employee in case of a workplace related injury.

Protecting workers in Northwest Territories and Nunavut entails the government to write down some laws.
