I am safe because I wear appropriate shoes at work to prevent a fall or an injury.

I am safe when I get adequate sleep so I am alert at work.

I slipped and fell at work due to improper shoes!

I burned my arm with nitric acid and missed a week of work.

Working safe, AKA not being an idiot at work, could have saved me from receiving eight stitches on my left hand. Since then I work when I’m paid to and play later.

I was trained by a local restaurant in workplace safety and have used that training throughout my job to stay safe.

I had a broken wrist and was told to get a co-worker (who was also my sister) to do any heaving lifting for me.

Don’t stand on a chair to get to the top shelf! You’ll fall!

I work with my Dad in home repairs and renos.  Last summer we went to Ft. Simpson to do a roof on a three-story apartment. I was scared to death on the roof up that high, but my Dad had harnesses and ropes, which he called “Fall Arrests”. I wasn’t going to test one out, but we did the roof in good time (and Dad did the work by the edges). It’s a memory that will last.

A coworker was trying to fix the coffee grinder with a knife without unplugging it or turning it off. The grinder caught the knife and it flew and impaled the pop cooler inches away from an employee’s head.

Three days before my last shift at my place of work, I was putting away product on a shelf and slipped coming off the ladder and fractured my ankle.

There was no emergency light in the bathroom so we started a safety group.

One year while working, the walk outside was very slippery in the fall time in the mornings. I took the initiative and contacted maintenance to have them salt the front walk before a serious accident happened.

I have been waitressing and working in food service for some time now, and the most common danger thing I have to look out for is people – putting on their coats and waiving at friends. One day a man, unaware, completely back handed me in the face. Now I always duck.

I learned to lift boxes using my knees to keep my back from getting injured.

While working retail I wasn’t paying too much attention to where I was walking and tripped over empty boxes behind the till. My boss managed to break my fall. After that little incident we always broke down boxes right away after receiving merchandise and put them to the side where they wouldn’t be in anyone’s way.

To be safe at work also means psychologically safe. Don’t let anyone bully you. You don’t have to do anything you aren’t comfortable with, even though you are young and probably newer than everyone else.

Young workers are our future, we have to show them the respect they deserve!
